Even though I would encourage being outside for the summer, sometimes you just have to stay in. How amazing does air conditioning feel during the summer? I know I love sitting back on a nice summer day with lemonade and watching summer movies. While there are holidays that coincide with movies, I do have select favorites for the summertime. The movies that I’ll list are more for the teenager to the adult audience. This isn’t going to include Spongebob if that’s what you’re thinking.
1. Dirty Dancing
This film is set in the summer with a group of wealthy families vacationing in the Catskills. There, Baby and her family enjoy the comforts of the beach, food and of course dancing. The main character Baby, played by Jennifer Grey, begins a romance with older dance instructor Johnny. This movie has that summer feeling and the forbidden romance element as well. This movie also contains the famous quote, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” Spoken by the late Patrick Swayze.
A less romantic turn is the movie Jaws that started a whole movie series. This film made me scared to go into the water for many years beyond its opening. In the 70s people weren’t as aware of sharks as they are now. The epic beginning scene had a group of children in the seemingly calm water playing during the summer. And then suddenly, one of the boys is attacked and killed by what is believed to be a Great White Shark. This movie changed the way people looked at the ocean.
3. Dazed And Confused
This is one of the more mature summer movies, with depictions of alcohol and drug use by High Schoolers. Watching it reminds you of that same excitement from the last day of High School. With so many possibilities and a future ahead of you. Best of all, you have the whole summer to kick bad and hang out with your friends. Although, these kids do way more than just hang out on their couch. It’s a wild ride with actors Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey. And his famous line, “All right, all right, all right.”
Adventureland is another great summer movie with themes of alcohol and drug use. In this case by the teenagers and the adults. This group of characters works together one summer at an amusement park. With lots of drama and lots of romance, this movie keeps your attention with many plot twists. This reminds you of those boring summer jobs you once had that you didn’t take to seriously. This star-studded cast has Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Stewart, Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Wiig.
5. Blue Crush
Blue Crush is centered around a surfer Anne Marie, played by Kate Bosworth. Living with her younger sister and friend she makes a living by giving surf lessons to wealthy tourists. Anne Marie gives lessons to an athlete that she later falls in love with. Of course, causing drama between her family and herself. All this conflict brings forth an interesting movie and a concept that hasn’t been used often in film. A romance between a surfer and a tourist, with money and fame complicating it. I hope you enjoyed these summer movies. Also, check out my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio movies.
